I hope you all had a wonderful May half term break, filled with fun, rest, and special moments with family and friends!

This term, we have lots of exciting learning ahead. We’ll be activating our prior knowledge to build on what we already know and tackle new challenges with confidence. With engaging activities, hands-on learning, and plenty of opportunities to explore new ideas, it’s going to be a fantastic term!

Let’s make this term amazing. See you all in class, ready to shine your lights!

Important Information

PE is timetabled for Monday and Tuesday, so all children are required to come to school in their PE kits on these days. Please ensure that your child come to school in the correct PE kit, which can be viewed here.

Swimming for Year 4 children will take place on Tuesday afternoons until the end of the academic year. As representatives of our school, children are expected to demonstrate excellent behaviour, respect and responsibility at all times while travelling to and from the swimming baths and during their session. We will be reinforcing the importance of following all instructions given by school staff and swimming instructors to ensure that safety is upheld at all times.

Spellings will be given out on Wednesday and tested the following Wednesday (please return the completed spelling sheets on the day of the test). I will also upload them to this page. The common exception words (below) are the spellings that your child is expected to know by the end of the year. However, additional words may appear in the weekly spellings to aid the learning of spelling rules.

Reading is extremely important and serves as a doorway to the rest of the curriculum. Please attempt to read for at least 10 minutes a day with your child. This half term, we would love for the children continue to bring in their reading record and reading book each Friday. This allows me to review their progress, and help support their continued growth and enjoyment of reading. We are also very fortunate that on Friday afternoons, Mrs Monaghan will be joining us voluntarily to read with Dawn Class. This is a wonderful opportunity for the children to enjoy extra reading time and develop their skills with support from another enthusiastic reader. Happy reading, and thank you for your continued support at home!

As I’m sure you are already aware, times tables are very important. As a class, we have agreed to use TT Rockstars for a minimum of 10-15 minutes each day from Monday to Friday.

Year 3: Children should focus on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables.
Year 4: Children should practise all times tables up to 12 × 12, in line with the UK National Curriculum.

Come back to our class page regularly for updates.

What are we learning?

In English…

This half term in English, the children will be studying the beautiful story A Necklace of Raindrops. Through reading and discussing the text, they will continue to develop their comprehension skills, exploring characters, themes, and the author’s use of language.

The children will be consolidating the writing skills they have developed throughout the year, applying key writing features with increasing independence and confidence. As they prepare for their transition to Year 4 and Year 5 in September, there will be a strong focus on producing high-quality writing, editing and improving their work, and demonstrating the progress they have made across the year.

This unit will provide the children with opportunities to showcase their creativity, apply their grammatical knowledge, and write for a range of purposes while continuing to develop as confident readers and writers.

In Maths…

This half term in Mathematics, the children will be focusing on time, money, statistics, and position and direction. They will continue to build their confidence and fluency in applying mathematical skills to a range of practical and problem-solving activities.

The children will learn how to read, interpret, and solve problems involving time, use and calculate with money, and collect and interpret data through statistics. They will also develop their understanding of position and direction by describing movements, turns, and locations using mathematical language.

Throughout the unit, the children will have opportunities to apply their learning in real-life contexts, helping them to deepen their understanding and prepare for the next stage of their mathematical journey in September.

To support our learning, we’ll continue following the White Rose Maths scheme, giving us lots of opportunities to practise, problem-solve, and apply our skills in different ways.

In Science…

This half term in Science, the children will be learning about sound and vibrations. They will explore how sounds are made, how vibrations travel, and how sound reaches our ears.

Through a range of practical investigations, the children will discover how different materials and objects produce sound and investigate how the volume and pitch of a sound can be changed. They will also learn about how sound travels through different mediums and how we can protect our hearing from sounds that are too loud.

This exciting topic will encourage the children to ask questions, make predictions, and develop their scientific enquiry skills through hands-on learning and exploration.

In RE…

This half term in Religious Education, the children will be exploring the question: “How and why do people mark the significant events in life?”

The children will learn about how people from different religions and beliefs celebrate and mark important milestones throughout life. They will explore ceremonies and traditions associated with events such as birth, coming of age, marriage, and death, and consider why these occasions are important to individuals, families, and communities.

Through discussion, reflection, and the study of different faiths, the children will develop their understanding of how beliefs and values influence the ways people celebrate and remember significant events in their lives. This topic will encourage respect for diversity and help children appreciate the similarities and differences between religious and non-religious traditions.

In History and Geography…

This half term in History, the children will be learning about the Ancient Greeks and the impact they have had on the world today.

They will explore what life was like in Ancient Greece, including the achievements, beliefs, and daily lives of the people who lived during this fascinating period. The children will learn about important aspects of Greek civilisation, such as democracy, the Olympic Games, mythology, and the contributions the Ancient Greeks made to areas including art, science, and mathematics.

Through a range of engaging activities and historical enquiry, the children will develop their understanding of how the Ancient Greeks have influenced many aspects of modern life and why their legacy remains important today.
