Art and Design is essential to prepare pupils to participate in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Pupils are encouraged to develop their investigating, designing, making and evaluating skills by thinking and intervening creatively. Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity promoting imagination. It provides a variety of sensory experiences and a unique way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern, construction and different materials and processes. Pupils will learn to make informed judgements and aesthetic and practical decisions. They will explore ideas and meanings through the work of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.
At ECSTG our art and design curriculum seeks to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they develop the skill of critical analysis and develop a more rigorous understanding of technique. Pupils will reflect on how art has shaped our history, and contributed to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

The National Curriculum for Art aims to ensure that all pupils:
Art and Design at St. George’s is taught through a weekly lesson. Each year group completes 3 units over the academic year. These units are designed and sequenced so that pupils can build on their knowledge and skills throughout the year and as they progress through school.
By the end of Year 6, children will be skilled in a range of techniques including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printing and textiles. They will know about the work of artists from a variety of cultures and time periods. We ensure this by:
Every child in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 has a sketchbook. In EYFS, each class has a class sketchbook. Children are given ownership of their sketchbooks so that they can develop their individual sense of creativity. Sketchbooks are used to practise skills, record ideas and develop knowledge and opinions.
Our children leave St. George’s with knowledge of and appreciation for a diverse range of artists. They will be able to respond to artwork and discuss what artists are influenced by and what messages they are trying to share through their art. Children will be confident to express and communicate their ideas in a variety of ways.
Children will be skilled in a range of art techniques. They will be able to use these to create works of art based on their own designs. Children will have explored a range of materials and mediums. They will have an understanding of what they can achieve with these and will be able to choose which they want to use for a given purpose.
This is demonstrated in sketchbooks and through our broad and balanced art curriculum and embedded key knowledge and vocabulary.
Children will have visited a variety of places to deepen their understanding and bring art to life, including Gallery Oldham. They will have had visits from artists to inspire them and teach them new techniques.
